Hatteras Island is an inviting modern vacation destination for travelers to enjoy but history buffs will love that it’s a place steeped in a rich past as well. A great place to get an understanding of just how far back the story goes is always the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.

A Museum Dedicated to a Tragic History

Located at 59200 Museum Drive in Hatteras, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is a one-of-a-kind stop for Outer Banks travelers who are looking to learn more about the area’s unique history. This museum was created specifically to honor the fact that thousands of ships have sunk in the waters off North Carolina’s Coast over the centuries due to the presence of dangerous Diamond Shoals. The museum can be visited Monday through Friday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm and there’s no cost to enjoy a self-guided tour. Donations are accepted as a way to keep this inviting stop up and running as it works to educate the public on local shipwrecks while preserving the local sites as well. When you visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, you’ll be visiting one of three destinations of this kind that make up the greater North Carolina Maritime Museum System. As you take time to browse the many exhibits and displays showcasing shipwreck artifacts, photos, and information, it’s hard not to feel an eerie sense of the past coming back to life before your eyes.

Programs to Check Out

Throughout the year, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is proud to host an array of special and educational programs for visitors to enjoy. Depending on the time of year you arrive, you might just be able to add a few to your itinerary. Throughout the summertime in particular, visitors can often take part in a seasonal lineup of lectures and presentations that are hosted at 11:00 am on Tuesdays and are free to attend. Summer also marks the season for the Maritime Crafts for Kids experience on Mondays. There’s no need to register for this creative experience on-site where all the supplies are furnished, but kids will need to be accompanied by an adult. This North Carolina museum also hosts renowned wreck diving photographers like Marc Corbett who are excited to share their experiences and expertise on what it takes to get up close to these underwater moments in time.
