Located within easy reach of central Hatteras Village, this destination promises to be as educational as it is engaging and a fantastic fit for visitors of all ages. An Outer Banks Destination with a Greater Purpose
Any time visitors drop by the Hatteras Island Ocean Center, they help promote the greater goals of the facility. At the Hatteras Island Ocean Center, the on-site team is dedicated to providing visitors and volunteers with opportunities to learn more about public history and the importance of wildlife and ocean conservation. The center regularly hosts learning and service projects for high school and college students as well as partnering with local conservation organizations and schools to create a community-focused place where outreach is always a priority.
What to Do While You’re Here
While an afternoon at the Hatteras Island Ocean Center is always a chance to explore on-site exhibits and displays, the vast majority of special programs kick off in May after Memorial Day. These include Kayak Nature Tours where you can head out alongside a knowledgeable guide to explore the diverse wildlife that call the salt marshes home. As you paddle your way through the Pamlico Sound, you’ll enjoy views and insight that are truly one-of-a-kind! Conservation Stations also kick off in May each year at the Hatteras Island Ocean Center and provide a place within the exhibit hall for guests to enjoy interactive activities that highlight the unique surrounding environment. If you’re looking to get up close to wildlife, Turtle Patrol at the Hatteras Island Ocean Center is a thrill. This event includes a brief presentation on the life cycle of local sea turtles followed by time on the beach learning how to spot turtle nests and what it takes to protect an endangered species. Guests heading to the Hatteras Ocean Center also have the opportunity to sign up for the Campfires, Crabs & Constellations program which runs from 7:30 pm until 9:30 pm Monday through Thursday. This program is a chance to learn more about the Outer Banks history by a fire on the sand while searching for ghost crabs, eating s’mores in good company, and ending the evening with a star search overhead.
