Rodanthe is the most northern village on Hatteras Island, so depending on the location of your vacation rental home, it could be up to a 45 minute to one hour trek to get there from the southern end. That being said, it’s worth the drive, bike or walk there. With that, we’ll assume that wherever you’ve started, you’ve gotten ready for the day, made the haul and are in Rodanthe by 9:00am. This may be a little late for some, but remember, you’re on island time! If you’re an early riser, take advantage of the beach or sound side in your area and create a beachcombing adventure all your own!
9:00am: Start out at Beach Mugs Coffee and Glass Bead Shop. With a variety of coffee drinks, smoothies and baked goods, you can grab breakfast at this local coffee house while accessing their free Wi-Fi, perusing the art and beads and/or browsing the other shops within Pamlico Station.
10:00am: Hop over a couple roads south and head down to the Rodanthe Fishing Pier. Chat up the folks in the pier house about what’s biting, rent a rod and grab some recommended bait, head out to the end and get your fish on! Between casts check out everyone’s catch and get an up close and personal look at the many species of fish that frequent the waters of Hatteras Island!
12:15pm: With the sun high in the sky, things will start to get a little toasty around lunch time. Turn in your pole and head below to the beach to take a dip and cool off, while the ocean washes away the smell of the morning’s adventures.
1:15pm: After some frolicking in the surf and a quick bake in the sun to dry off, that tummy is sure to be rumbling. Head on over to Lisa’s Pizzeria to cool off inside with a tasty pizza pie and some of their famous fried broccoli!
2:15pm: Step next door to Rodanthe Watersports and pick your poison. You’ll find a variety of choices between jet skis and wave runners, kayaks, surfboards, skim boards and boogie boards, stand up paddle boards and sailboat lessons or tours (call ahead for rates and availability).
4:15pm: Head on over to Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station and soak in some island history. Visit the gift shop and tour the grounds for an up close and personal view of island life back in the early days.
5:00pm: Head across the street to the quaint and long-standing Rodanthe Surfshop. Here you’ll find a selection of island apparel fit for the surf culture on Hatteras Island.
