Take some time away, enjoy time with loved ones surrounded by plenty of sand, sun, water, and fun and celebrate independence this 4th of July. North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and especially Hatteras Island, have something for everyone to enjoy during a 4th of July respite this year. Relax and unwind wherever you please, or find some fun and exciting to do on-shore or off-shore that are always available on your Hatteras vacation.

Avon Fishing Pier Fireworks

Make fishing a part of your holiday plans, then look toward the sky for a fireworks display at the end of the day. You can see the fireworks all along the Avon beach. The pier stretches 665 feet out into the Atlantic is open for fishing 6 a.m. – 10 p.m., so make sure visiting the pier is part of your daytime activities. It’s crooked bends in the pier are a testament to time and Mother Nature beating away. The date and time of 4th of July festivities has not yet been confirmed.

4 for the 4th

Midgett Realty and the Barrier Island Group want you to get out and get some exercise before your 4th of July cookout. The four-mile run/walk through Avon’s Kinnakeet Shores neighborhood is a great way to get some exercise and start celebrating the holiday early.

Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station

The life-saving station in Rodanthe is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2024. Stop by and learn about it’s most well-known rescue: August 16, 1918, when the men at the station saved 42 of the crewmembers of the doomed British tanker SS Mirlo.

The now-decommissioned station hosts rescue re-enactments and talks about the fateful day, special speakers covering topics like Hatteras Island and the Cold War, shipwrecks and lifesaving, and more. Tour Midgett House – where lifesavers and their families lived, and more.

There will be a special re-enactment event on July 4 at 2 p.m.

Golf Cart Parade

Decorate a golf cart in beautiful red, white, and blue and join the parade. The 11th annual parade has grown from its humble beginnings and now features over 50 carts of all styles, each decked out in fun patriotic themes. There is a free village cookout at the Village Center, where parade winners will be announced.

The parade starts at Teach’s Lair Marina on N.C. Highway 12, and cruises through the heart of Hatteras village on the way toward Eagle Pass Road. Anyone with a golf cart they can decorate is welcome to join. You can also choose to be a spectator and line the parade route to cheer for your favorite.

Tri Villages Market

Explore the market and its many artists’ and makers’ tent setups featuring clothing, art, baked goods, fresh produce, and more. You’ll find the fun at Camp Hatteras Campground located at 24798 NC Hwy 12. The event takes place Wednesdays 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., June 12-September 25, making it a great addition to your itinerary.

The date for the market to include on your 4th of July schedule is Wednesday, July 5, 2024.

Sunday Brunch with Live Music

Every Sunday throughout the summer, including during the 4th of July holiday, head to Cafe Pamlico inside The Inn on Pamlico Sound in Buxton for delicious brunch fare and live music. Sip on mimosa flights.

Brunch is every Sunday, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. It is going on now through September 29, 2024. Call the cafe for reservations at 252-995-4500. Sunday brunch events to incorporate into your 4th of July holiday include July 2 and 9.

Beaches

An island escape, no matter where in the world that island may be, means time on the beach, especially during the 4th of July holiday. The warm weather and waters of Hatteras Island mean you can spend as much time out in the sun on your beach days as you please. Lay out and sunbathe, get your exercise with a run or walk on the sand, or take to the water for a swim, jet ski, kayak, paddleboard, or parasailing adventure. Plunge below the waves on a snorkel or SCUBA tour to meet the residents below the water.

Other 4th of July Celebrations

No matter what, your stay in the Outer Banks this 4th of July will be full of red, white, and blue celebrations. Many towns on the other islands will have their own celebrations like parades, fireworks, getting out an exercising with 5K or family fun runs.
