Beaches

An island escape means plenty of beach time for everyone during a pre-back-to-school vacation on Hatteras Island. The warm weather and waters of summer allow you and your loved ones to spend a little extra time out in the sun on your beach days. Lay out and sunbathe, get some exercise with a walk or run on the sand, watch the kids play on the sand, or splash around in the Atlantic for a swim.

Water Activities

In addition to the many beach activities that may have attracted you to Hatteras Island before the first bell of the school year rings, there are water sports to experience while you’re here, too. Paddle your way through calmer waters on a stand-up paddleboard, kayak, or canoe through the pristine marshes and wildlife sanctuary of the area. Up the adrenaline, fun, and speed and take off on a jet ski. Take the fun below the waves on a snorkeling or SCUBA tour. You’ll need to be SCUBA certified before striking out on your own.

Learn a new skill together. Certified surf instructors will take you from land classes to catching your first wave in no time. Choose traditional surfing, wind surfing, or both. Once you’re comfortable with your skills, rent some gear and start catching your own waves.

Fishing

Let the anglers of the group know there are plenty of places and ways to drop a line and try their luck during a back-to-school vacation. Charter a boat, stick to shore and do a little surf fishing, or head to some of the most popular fishing piers in the area.

Enjoy time together at Avon Fishing Pier. It’s open 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. and stretches 665 feet out into the Atlantic. Fishing off the end undoubtedly scores some interesting catches not found closer to shore. Another good spot to cast a line is the Rodanthe Pier, where your next big fish story may include sea mullet, spot, bluefish, trout, and many others. The pier is open daily 6 a.m. – 12 a.m.

Beach Horseback Riding

Whether you and your loved ones are seasoned equestrians, or your back-to-school trip to Hatteras Island is your first time on a horse, make the beautiful backdrop of the beach and waves of the Atlantic Ocean surrounding the island a ride to remember. Horses walk down the sandy beaches, and some can even be guided into the water for a splash on an unforgettable beach experience!

Call or email to make reservations with your selected company, and be prepared to provide ages, height, and weight of riders. It will help pair you and all your traveling companions with the horse most appropriate for each person.

Hatteras Weather Bureau Station

Get a living history lesson when you visit the historic wood-frame building. Built in 1901, it was commissioned 1902-1946, and provided data on conditions in the Atlantic Ocean from a fixed location farther into the ocean environment than any other on the Atlantic Coast. Once it was decommissioned as a weather station, it became living quarters for Weather Bureau personnel, and has since been used as a research station by the universities and other higher education institutions in the state.

Hatteras Island Ocean Center

Get an ocean life lesson you won’t get in any classroom. Learn about and help improve the environment of the Outer Banks during your vacation, too. The center stretches across Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Islands, Down East, and the Pamlico Sound and is part of the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway. The center is a great place for nature lovers of all ages and is within walking distance of central Hatteras Village.

Paddle around and explore on a kayak nature tour, go on “Turtle Patrol” and learn about the area’s sea turtles and see active nests, or learn about birding in the barrier islands. Its programs may be coming to a close for the fall, so make sure your preferred activity will still be available during your trip.
