Kill Devil Hills is another town located near the middle of the Northern Outer Banks, best known for being the site of the Wright Brothers’ first flight in 1903. The Wright Brothers Memorial, a popular attraction in Kill Devil Hills, sits atop the 90-foot-tall “Big Kill Devil Hill” and is surrounded by breathtaking sand dunes. The Memorial has a full-scale reproduction of the aircraft used in the historic flight.
Another popular day trip activity is the 1400-acre Nature Conservancy at Nags Head Woods (don’t let the name fool you, it is in Kill Devil Hills). Here, visitors can spend time hiking and exploring the maritime forest, sand dunes, ponds, and wetlands.
