One thing Hatteras Island loves is a good holiday and Halloween is no exception. With a place brimming with so much history, it is sure to be overflowing in tales of the deep, tales of the lost, tales of war and tales of forelorn love. There are various ways to spin a good ghost story, but no setting is as rich as Hatteras Island, so head to “The Banks” and settle in for a crisp, fall night of creepy quiet and fun fright. Are you afraid of the dark? Don’t forget your flashlight!

Top 4 Ways to Celebrate Halloween on Hatteras Island

Frisco Spaceship

1. Check Out Our Spaceship: Some of our favorite scary movies include creatures from beyond (Hello, “Alien”). Get in the spirit with a pit-stop at the island’s notorious spaceship in Frisco. Off of Highway 12, it’s just past Scotch Bonnet Marina on the left (when heading south).

2. Pay Homage to “The Cora Tree”: There are various tales passed down from the ol’ timers of Hatteras Island, but none leave behind the eerie evidence quite like the tale of Cora. On the coat tails of the Salem Witch Trials, Cora was deemed a witch and then tied to a tree in Brigand’s Bay to be burned with her baby in her arms as punishment for her sinister ways. As the story goes, in a scuffle the baby turned into a cat and fled, and instantaneously a storm rolled in, striking the tree with lightning. Once the smoke cleared, everything was as it had been, except for the tree had been split and four letters were burned into it spelling “CORA”. Read the full tale here.

3. Ghost Stories Around a Bonfire: Grab a permit and some friends and head to the beach. Set the mood for all Hallows’ Eve with a bonfire by the sea. Come prepared with your favorite scary tales and get ready to get spooked as the whispers of the lost sailors from the Graveyard of The Atlantic creep on the wind around you. (Psst: Don’t forget the s’mores–the sticks are perfect for fighting off ghosts!)

4. Trunk-or-Treat: Hurricane Matthew can’t hold Hatteras Island down! Storm debris is still in the clean-up process in certain parts of the island, so allow us to present Trunk-or-Treat. This year folks are gathering at the Beach Klub in Avon and the Fire Department in Hatteras with decorated trunks to disperse their treats. No tricks here! Just head to one of the two locations for a safe environment for the kiddos to celebrate a night of Halloween fun!
