Hatteras Island is filled to the brim with things to do. And I don’t just mean your standard, run-of-the-mill attractions. Buried beneath that trip to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and your visit to the Frisco Native American Museum are quirky little open mic nights at coffee shops and bluegrass banjo pickers playing their hearts out in bar rooms. Hatteras Island is a life force all of its own flanked with artists, instrumentalists, adventurers, intellects and more, and those little underground occasions will be the ones that inspire you. It’s there your vacation will turn into an adventure.
If you’ve read our blog on Gallery Row, or driven down Highway 12, you can see that the art scene is not lacking on this little sandbar that we call home. One island favorite is in Avon, tucked back into Kinnakeet Village. Kinnakeet Clay Studio and Showroom was founded by local artisan, Antoinette Gaskins Mattingly and has a wealth of pottery, artwork, jewelry and more. More than just a gallery, one of her main attractions is her in-house pottery classes. Offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays (with overflow classes occasionally available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), Antoinette’s hand-picked and wildly talented instructors lead you through one of two classes: “mugs and bowls” or “fairy houses”. During these classes, you choose a mold of your liking, let your inner artist spill out onto the canvas (your provided clay slab), and create, create, create.
There are no boundaries on creativity here. You are provided with a variety of tools to use to your liking, and from there, the slab becomes what you make it. It’s true, all artists work differently and become inspired by different things, but with good tunes on the playlist, and a mixed table of friends and strangers, these classes are a fun and easy creative channel to enjoy. All levels of experience are welcome with open arms and encouragement, so if you’re looking for a couple of hours out of the sun to make your vacation more than just a trip to the beach, be sure to make this one of your stops while seeking adventure!
