The year-round sun and warmer temperatures of North Carolina make them an ideal destination for your getaway, no matter what time of year you come. Set your sights on Hatteras Island this spring, and you’ll find there are plenty of spring festivals and Hatteras Island events for you to plan your trip around, plus plenty of beach fun.

Kiteboarding Kick-Off Weekend

Kitty Hawk Kiteboarding starts the season with a weekend full of demos, tech talks, and of course, kiting. The weekend is packed with activities each day around the Waves Village Watersports Resort in Rodanthe. The two-day celebration takes place May 26-28, with varying hours each day. The free admission event does have some paid clinics and talks for a small fee.

Taste of the Beach

The event takes place mostly on the Northern Beaches and Roanoke Island, but Hatteras Island showcases its flavors as well. The “Classic Outer Banks 4×4” is part of the weekend event and takes place for Hatteras Island visitors at Dirty Dick’s Crab House in Avon. Dirty Dick’s event is named for its four food courses and four beverage selections (4×4). Those who attempt the large meal will want to budget about two hours. Tickets are $110 with alcoholic beverages or $80 without. Gratuity is NOT included in the cost. You can register for the event at the Taste of the Beach event website. This takes place the whole weekend of the festival, March 24-26.

Rock the Cape

Celebrate spring and the coming of summer with food, music, art, and fun. The 11th annual event is free and family-friendly, highlighting the visual and performing arts of Hatteras Island. Festivities start June 1 at Kitty Hawk Kites’ Waves Village Watersports Center in Rodanthe.

Easter

If you’re here for an Easter getaway, several churches, community centers, and other local groups host Easter egg hunts, parties, pictures with the Easter bunny, and more. Churches also offer special Easter services, and area restaurants may be serving up the traditional Easter meal. Contact your church or restaurant of choice to find out just what’s happening and when. Restaurants may require reservations for the meal.

Fishing Tournaments

The North Carolina Beach Buggy Association (NCBBA) hosts several fishing tournaments throughout the spring and all the way through the fall. Many of the tournaments listed take place on Hatteras Island, while there are others on Ocracoke Island and along other Outer Banks Piers. See the NCBBA website for a complete schedule and how to enter each tournament.

Ocracoke Island Waterfowl Festival

While the Hatteras Island festival takes place in February, likely before your spring plans have formed, nearby Ocracoke Island celebrates its waterfowl festival in April. The annual event brings waterfowl decoy carvers and even collectors together to celebrate the time-honored art and tradition of decoy carving. This year’s spotlight shines on the Pintail duck, which locals often refer to as the Springtail. This year’s event takes place on April 15.

Dare Days Festival

While no dates have been selected yet, the festival typically takes place in late May or early June. The family-friendly event features activities like live music, games, kids’ crafts, bounce houses, and more. There are several food vendors and other booths that gather everyone at Roanoke Island Festival Park for three days of fun.

Ocrafolk Festival

Take a short trip to Ocracoke and celebrate folk culture. The late spring event celebrates everything “folk,” from music and storytelling to art and local food, and even more! The community-wide festival is a weekend full of fun right in the heart of Ocracoke Village and on the shores of Silver Lake Harbor. This year’s festival takes place June 2-4 and is the perfect way to finish the spring and anticipate the summer.

Scallywag 5K/10K/Half-Marathon

Get your exercise this spring, with a little island hopping along with a run! Lace up your running shoes, put on your best eye patch and pirate costume, and set out to Ocracoke. The annual event attracts runners of all ages and abilities to run the course that offers beautiful views of the water.
