The next time you need a break, make sure to add plenty of sand, sun, water, and fun. The barrier islands of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and especially Hatteras Island, have something for everyone for a relaxing Hatteras Island vacation any time of year. You’ll find an abundance of things to see and do, and you’re bound to hear your stomach rumble while you’re at it all. While there are many brick-and-mortar restaurants ready to serve you, sometimes you just want or need to grab-and-go so the fun doesn’t stop. You’ll find a variety of food trucks serving delicious eats to satisfy your on-the-go appetite.
Crazy Johnny’s Bar-B-Que
For restaurant-quality bar-b-que on the go, make sure you add them to your menu. Their red truck is typically located in Buxton, across from Conner’s Supermarket. Enjoy classic eastern North Carolina BBQ including ribs, brisket, chicken, and more. Add on any of a variety of homemade sides and desserts, too. Locals warn that if you’re adding it to your menu for the day, make sure to get there early – once they run out of supplies, they pack it in for the day. You can also have them cater a private event if you’re having one during your Hatteras Island retreat.
Dizzy’s Ice Cream Truck
Ice cream trucks are some of the original food trucks. A classic ice cream truck, you’ll have dozens of frozen treats to choose from. Choose an ice cream sandwich, or ice cream bars with themes that include SpongeBob, Ninja Turtles, Sonic the Hedgehog, and many others. Pick something a little more unusual like a slushie, fudge bar, or push pop. They even have Frosty Paws ice creams for your pooch on a hot day!
Hatteras Bowls
Make waves with your day’s menu in Waves. Find the truck near the water of the Tri-Villages if you’re looking for a healthy snack. The truck camps out there all summer long, serving up Acai bowls with a variety of toppings, vegan ice cream, ice-free smoothies, avocado toast, and a selection of coffee and tea. Your selection comes in an eco-friendly bowl with an eco-friendly spoon, and both area biodegradable.
Hoy Lechon
Lechon means “to grill,” and the Rodanthe-based food truck takes it to heart. They dish up grilled pork, chicken, and beef and add Asian influences. The owners are of Filipino and Chinese descent and bring tastes like spring rolls, Filipino BBQ chicken, adobo fried rice, and more to the residents and visitors of Rodanthe. Pick up lunch or dinner, family-style meals, or book them to cater an event. Find them regularly at the Liberty gas station at the foot of the Jug Handle bridge into Rodanthe.
Stu’s Food Truck
The seasonally available truck is often parked near the foot of the Avon Pier. They offer breakfast and brunch to the residents and visitors in Avon, with options to start your day or keep you going through the afternoon. You’ll know you’ve found the cash-only establishment when you see the menu written on a surfboard standing next to the order window. Choose from homemade biscuits, breakfast sandwiches, veggie tacos, breakfast tacos, and more to start your day. For your afternoon fill-up, choose BBQ dishes, hot dogs, or their delicious pulled pork tacos.
Taqueria Las Ahumaderas
Another Rodanthe-based truck, you’ll want to head to the area around StingWray’s in Rodanthe for delicious on-the-go Mexican eats. Choose from Mexican classics like burritos, enchiladas, gorditas, nachos, quesadillas, tortas. You can also taste seafood with a Mexican kick including fish tacos and shrimp.
Uncle Frank’s Hot Dogs and Barbecue
They’re making waves with the traditional tastes of hot dogs and barbecue at this Waves-based food truck. The truck serves up hot dogs with some creative fixings. You’ll also be able to taste Southern-style barbecue with all the fixings available, too. Cap the meal with thirst-quenching soft drinks or a cold beer. Take a seat and enjoy your meal at the picnic tables nearby or devour it on the go. If you’re environmentally conscious when it comes to your barbeque, they focus on sustainable, high-quality ingredients for all their dishes. If you want your selection hot and ready to pick up and go, order ahead on their website.
