Lesser populated with homes and businesses, Frisco remains one of the quieter villages on Hatteras Island but is still filled with plenty of charm and a variety of attractions worth exploring! Unlike its more commercialized neighbors, Frisco retains a quiet, laid-back atmosphere that draws visitors looking for a tranquil escape. Whether you’re a beach lover, history buff, or nature enthusiast, Frisco has something for everyone. Here are some of the must-explore experiences in this hidden gem on Hatteras Island.
Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve
About a mile from the entrance to the Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve, this large swath of maritime forest also expands well into Frisco where nature lovers will rejoice at the opportunity to hike the many miles of trails and hills that go deep into this largely untouched natural area. With plenty of tall trees and dense forest to explore, be prepared to encounter wildlife from whitetail deer, a variety of birds, turtles, snakes, frogs, and more!
Soundside
While we definitely aren’t knocking oceanfront playtime, we are tipping our hats to a good soundside adventure! As a good part of the Frisco oceanside is maritime forest, a good portion of residential communities are on the soundside of Highway 12, boasting calmer waters for boating, fishing, clamming, crabbing, and a wide assortment of watersports. One of the soundside’s most famous claims to fame is the magical sunsets, which 100% can’t be beat!
Ramp 49
Frisco Beach is one of the most popular beaches island-wide due to its ease of access via off-road vehicle (with the proper ORV beach driving permit). Ramp 49, located just beyond the Billy Mitchell Airstrip, offers access to long stretches of coastline where its visitors can park and play without the hassle of having to cart all of their gear further than the truck bed. Often forming friendships with fellow vacationers and locals, this little community of beachgoers is a major part of the Hatteras Island experience for many!
Billy Mitchell Airstrip
Another cool Frisco feature that is often overlooked is the Billy Mitchell Airstrip. A major convenience for those with the means, it more just adds to the experience when beaching it anywhere along Ramp 49. While the landing strip runs parallel to the duneline, it’s cool to see private planes taking off and landing seemingly right above you when your toes are in the sand.
Frisco Native American Museum
Open since 1987, The Frisco Native American Museum is a non-profit educational foundation created for the purpose of preserving Native American artifacts, art, and culture. With loads of exhibits and trails, FNAM is as exciting to explore inside as it is out. Also offering classes, presentations, and workshops, each providing a deep insight into the indigenous peoples who once lived in this region, you won’t want to sleep on this cool bit of culture and history!
Eateries
Eateries in Frisco are few but mighty! From the Gingerbread House’s delicious slice to local favorite Tavern on 12’s always fresh menu and specials, you can easily find something for everyone. You can even make a night of it at Pamlico Deli’s Wine Nights as you graze their fresh charcuterie paired with the most perfect wine.
The Cora Tree
There are various tales passed down from the ol’ timers of Hatteras Island, but none leave behind the eerie evidence quite like the tale of Cora. Taking place on the heels of the Salem Witch Trials, the remnants of this spooky island legend of a supposed witch named “Cora” are quite literally burned into a tree in Brigand’s Bay. Get your hackles up when you stop by and check out this local Frisco landmark.
The Frisco Bathhouses
Another perk for Frisco beachgoers is the lifeguarded beach at the Frisco Bath Houses. Staffed from Memorial Day to Labor Day, you can rest easy with the added layer of safety that comes with having another set of eyes in the event of an emergency. As the name indicates, you’ll also have the convenience of recently remodeled his and hers bathrooms, as well as dual banks of outdoor showers for rinsing off the salt and sand before hopping back in the car.
