TOP 5 FREE THINGS TO DO ON HATTERAS ISLAND

1. Go to the beach!

Unlike other vacation destinations, Hatteras Island is unique in many ways, one being that you don’t have to shell out cash to soak in the sun from these sandy shores. Added bonus? The opportunities to access the beach are quite plentiful! The majority of Midgett Realty’s oceanfront, 1 back, and oceanside properties have either a private or community beach access within an easy walking distance from their front door. For soundside properties and those that don’t, fret not, the public accesses are aplenty! For those that wish to drive on the beach, the permit required by the National Park Service does admittedly cost money, however, most all of the ORV routes have FREE parking lots for pedestrians who wish to skip the fee and walkover on foot. And a little perk of the park is that they are well maintained…as is the entire shoreline! Beyond the ORV access lots, there are also free public parking lots scattered around the island from Rodanthe to Hatteras Village including the Rodanthe Beach Access, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and the Frisco Bathhouses.

2. Splash around in the Pamlico Sound

Water lovers can get their fill of splash time and swap out the waves of the ocean for the quiet lapping waters of the Pamlico Sound. Shallow and calmer waters are great for kids, those who may struggle with mobility issues, and anyone who wants to hop on a float and l-o-u-n-g-e. That’s not to say you can’t kick it up a notch. Hop on a paddleboard, slip in a kayak, or ride the wind on a kiteboard for some added excitement, or even try your hand at crabbing, clamming, or fishing! With public parking lots available throughout the island, regardless of what property you’re staying in, splashing around in the sound is easy and free! Some of the most popular access points are the Salvo Day Use Area, Canadian Hole, Kite Point, and Sandy Bay Day Use. Just be sure to stick around when the sun gets low in the sky. You definitely don’t want to miss out on a Hatteras Island sunset!

3. Hit the trails

Little known fact: Hatteras Island is home to one of the largest maritime forests on the Atlantic Coast! Buxton Woods Reserve occurs on a series of east-west running relic sand dunes and encompasses approximately 3,000 acres in its entirety while hosting more than 360 species of birds as well as an incredible variety of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and other rare and unusual species. Open year-round, trails are available all throughout Buxton Woods for hiking and exploring this rich diversity of subtropical and temperate species. Just be sure to stick to the trails and leave nothing behind aside from your footprints!

4. Explore the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

While donations are accepted and encouraged at this recently renovated coastal landmark, admission to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is free. One of North Carolina’s Maritime Museums, you’ll find a variety of interactive and engaging exhibits, as well as programs for kids and adults. If you’re in the market for souvenirs or gifts, don’t forget to stop by the well-curated gift shop!

5. Build a bonfire under the stars

Far away from the city lights, Hatteras Island is well known for its darkened skies. Perfect for stargazing, gather your crew and build a bonfire at the beach. Tell your favorite ghost stories, chase ghost crabs, and enjoy an evening under the stars. If a couple of roasted hot dogs and some s’mores make their way into the mix, your vacation will be complete! Remember to download this free permit and keep it on your person at all times!
