10 Budget-Friendly Activities on Hatteras Island
Avon & Rodanthe Fishing Piers
Whether you’re interested in merely sightseeing or testing your luck at catching the big one, daily passes for the Avon & Rodanthe Piers are cost-effective solutions for enjoying an adventurous day at the beach!
Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station & Historical Site
The Life-Saving Station at Chicamacomico is a history buff’s must-see while visiting Hatteras Island. Take tours, view the buildings all thoughout the site, watch live drills and reenactments, and learn about the rich history of the brave men and women who risked their lives to save those caught up in the dangers of the deadly Graveyard of the Atlantic. With admission ranging between $6-$10, there is also a $30 Family Pass for up to 5 family members.
Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center
Opening in 1987 as non-profit educational foundation with 501 (c) (3) status, The Frisco Native American Museum (FNAM) lives in a building which is nearly 100 years old, with an equally rich history as a general store, gathering place, post office, and shell shop. Now hosting thousands of artifacts and exhibits dedicated to local tribes, guests will also want to be sure to explore the nature trail and Natural History Center. Admission ranges from $5-$8 with the added option of a $20 Household Pass that allows for 2 adults and up to 4 children.
Fishing on Cape Point
Cape Point is the famous meeting place of the warm Gulf Stream and the chillier Labrador Current, making this a rather popular fishing destination for anglers all over the world. Drop by one of the island’s local tackle shops to get pointed in the right direction in terms of equipment and bait so you can get a full dose of Hatteras Island’s fishing fever! ORV Permits are required by the National Park Service to drive on the designated seashore routes, with two permit types available. Currently, a 10-day permit is $50 and an annual permit is $120.
Hit the Music Scene
A night out on Hatteras Island doesn’t have to be an expensive one. While we would never encourage you to skip out on the opportunity to enjoy a delectable meal at any of Hatteras Island’s delicious eateries, if your budget is tighter right now, perhaps this year is the time to trade a dinner out for a dinner in at your Midgett Realty vacation rental’s state-of-the-art kitchen. Afterwards, hit the town for drinks, dessert, and live music at one of the island’s many establishments that provide such for an exciting night of merriment and island culture.
Galleries + Craft Fairs + Markets
Like the music scene, the art scene on Hatteras Island is an extensive one with roots that run deep. Easily inspired by all that surrounds us, you’ll find an array of thoughtful galleries as well as seasonal fairs, markets, and arts + craft shows. Admission is typically free with handcrafted goods that range in price from low to high. This is the perfect way to find budget-friendly, yet unique, souvenirs and gifts while also supporting the local economy
Beach Driving Along the Seashore
Beach walks are indeed great for the mind, body, and soul. An ever-changing landscape, you’re sure to come upon treasures ranging from seashells to unexpected marine life views to photo-worthy foliage. But there is something to also be said about a Hatteras beach drive. With the windows down and the salty breeze flowing through your hair below the sunny blue skies, it can be equally as tranquil, or even invigorating, to stare out at the passing seashore as the truck bumps gently below you to the beat of the soft sand. As previously mentioned, a 10-day permit is $50 and an annual permit is $120. A small price to pay to find your peace.
Day-Trip to Ocracoke
Doing the little island hop over to Ocracoke can be a fun way to spend one of your vacation days while you’re here and there are a couple ways to travel. Both docked at the Hatteras Ferry Terminal, you can drive over on the free car ferry (recommended if you plan to visit the beach) or you can pay the $15 (roundtrip) fee to take the passenger ferry which drops you at Silver Lake, in the heart of the village. For an additional $1 fee, guests can bring a bike onto the passenger ferry to scoot around the village (recommended), or you can walk, take the free trolley, or rent a golf cart (reserve in advance during summer months)! While you’re there, enjoy lunch at one of the local eateries, peruse the quaint and quirky shops, and be sure to check another lighthouse off of your list when you visit the Ocracoke Light Station.
Drinks at Sunset
Particularly in Hatteras Village, drinks at sunset are a favorite pastime for locals and visitors alike! Whether you’re trying a craft beer on tap from Hatteras Landing’s Ship Store or sipping a cocktail around the corner at the Wreck, grabbing a cold one from the dock store at Oden’s Dock or relishing in something a little fancier upstairs on the deck at Breakwater, drinks at sunset are great for photos, flavors, and fun!
Try a Watersport
This can be as low-key or high-gear as your adventurous spirit desires. Peruse the waters via SUP or kayak, ride the waves on a surf or kiteboard, or let the wind blow through your hair on a jetski! With loads of rental options available island-wide, this is one budget-friendly way to turn your island vacation into an adventure for all kinds!
