A Place Rich in Fascinating History

Before it was known as Salvo, this Hatteras Island village was known as Clarks, or Clarksville. It wasn’t until 1901 when the first post office arrived in the area that the modern name of Salvo was adopted by residents. The legend behind the new name links back to a story about a Union ship during the Civil War making its way from Fort Hatteras to modern-day Salvo. It’s said that the commander of the ship asked about the name of where they docked and was informed the Union chart didn’t in fact have a name listed for the location.
The commander then reportedly told an assistant to “give it a salvo anyway,” with “salvo” referring to the firing of a cannon in this time period. Ultimately, that comment led to the area being listed as “Salvo” on all subsequent Union charts and it’s stuck around ever since. In addition to being an important Civil War landmark, Salvo played host to the North Carolina Gull Shoal Life-Saving Station from 1878 to 1940. Those who worked here were charged with rescuing maritime travelers in distress and without their help, many more lives would have certainly been lost.
